Basic home renovation questions

Hello,we are looking for reactions to the estimates we have recd. from contractors for the jobs below. The range of estimates we have recd. makes it hard to decide whether one is overpriced or being pragmatic or the other is just lowballing to get the job. Any input would be great. Kitchen Pantry – Reasonable Cost to Build We are looking to use the space in our kitchen where currently there is an angled stair to the Garden level. We want to remove one side of the perpendicular stair rail, build a base (which will appear as the ceiling to those going down the stairs), and then build a basic wood pantry closet on top. We have recd. estimates from $4K to $1500K. Any thoughts on what is reasonable price for good quality work but no fancy materials or hardware? Finish walls and paint – reasonable price We are looking to have our entire 2040 sqft painted including walls, doors, mouldings, stairs and bathrooms. This may require some caulking and finishing up cracks in the wood etc. Looking for mid-range paint.Any estimates on cost or cost / sq ft? Thank you

If you got an estimate of $1.5 million for this, please post the name of the firm so we can refer Mr.Trump to him. Estimates of painting are typically 500-1000 per room with standard prep work as you describe.

About the built in pantry – Not knowing the details of your design, ( but I can picture it in my head.) I would think with demo, framing over the stairs, flooring, drywall, finish carpentry, hardware electric, custom doors and shelving, staining, finishing, around 6-8 k sounds realistic. Nice use of space. Could look really pretty in oak! Not sure what painters are charging these days. Best to get a few quotes and recs for that. I would go with a high grade Benjamin Moore paint for best results that will last for a really long time.
