Gas Line Question
Hi All, We are doing some updates to the rental unit in our new brownstone and we will be replacing the appliances in the kitchen. The stove that is in the unit currently stands out from the wall because the gas line protrudes quite a bit. Does anyone know if this is something that should be easily adjusted or is it something that will be very involved? Wanted to get input and be a little more informed before contacting a plumber so I am prepared to discuss with them. Ive attached (2) photos. And yes, there will be serious cleaning/de-greasing going on once we get started so please try to look past how dirty it is back there currently! Many thanks

Well, you want an opinion. As a matter of fact even test of gas lines requires permit. Any alteration or repair of gas line requires permit. This is the law. Appliance shut off gas valve is a part of gas line. These are facts. And for what it worth: Plumbing permits: for the installation or alteration of plumbing and plumbing systems, including gas piping. Such permits shall include permits for limited plumbing alterations §[1606.1] 27-919 Inspection.-Every new plumbing and gas piping system and every part of an existing system that has been altered, except for ordinary repairs, shall be inspected and tested to determine compliance with code requirements WORK NOT CONSTITUTING MINOR ALTERATIONS OR ORDINARY REPAIRS. Minor alterations or ordinary repairs shall not include: 6\. Any plumbing work other than the repair or replacement of plumbing fixtures, piping or faucets from the exposed stop valve to the inlet side of a trap

Definitely get a plumber who knows what they’re doing, but I doubt anyone is going to insist on filing for something this trivial.

I am definitely NOT looking to make any changes to the gas line myself, but Gennady, just fora licensed plumber to change this to an elbow valve or some kind of receptacle would require DOB permits? With no intent to move the line location or the output location? Just to change the shape or fixture?

You can not touch this gas valve. Outlet of the gas valve is where gas line is officially ends. Otherwise you must hire licensed plumber, file job with building department and so on. So it is your call.

If that gas valve were replaced by an elbow pointed upward, and the valve put on top of the elbow, I’d think that would get you enough room to push the stove back. Very doable. By a licensed plumber. Not a handyman.

Should not be hard to do. You need something like that in the wall: http://www.supplyhouse.com/Sioux-Chief-696-1031GF-Gas-Ox-Box-Bagged-3-4-NPT-Valve-and-Adapter-for-Iron-Pipe
