We need a boiler and new hot water heater - limited budget. Ideas appreciated!

We recently purchased a 3.5 story house with ancient water heater and boiler. The house heats on oil but we will convert. Do you have any recs? I hear of energy efficient combined boilers and heaters – but does this make sense? Is it economical? Thanks.

If you’re on a “limited budget”, then get a cast iron, standard efficiency boiler and free-standing gas-fired water heater. Resist the temptation to get a boiler fitted with a tankless coil (cheapest purchase but costly to operate), unless you’re going to add a storage tank, which is going to put you into a higher cost category.
