Unidentified object in soil
When digging in my backyard today I came across this strange object. The part that is protruding and can be seen in the photo is about 6 inches long and 2 inches in circumference, and is attached to something deep in the soil by what looks like an electrical cable. I can’t pull it out and am wary of using clippers to cut it off just in case it’s live. It is nowhere near the building – about 20 yards away so it’s hard to believe it’s part of a live electric circuit but I can’t imagine what else it might be. Does anyone have any ideas?

HD or Lowe’s (or other hardware store) sells voltage detectors that indicate the presence of any electricity. They cost under $12\. Useful in many other ways – e.g. is an appliance burnt out or a circuit breaker blown?

Possibly an electric line underground to a garage or rear yard lighting or a gas line to lighting of BBQ. Hard to tell from photo.
