Tankless High-Efficiency Gas Water Heater -- Venting?

I’m replacing an electric water heater tank, and my GC is recommending a high-efficiency, tankless gas model. Since I’m on the ground floor, venting is an issue. He says that this model can be vented above the ceiling and through the exterior wall using PVC. Is this permitted according to code? The GC says this is allowed for high-efficiency, low emission models.

for what it’s worth, i did some research on tankless heaters and decided against one. my plumber seconded that choice.

No more PVC venting for boilers in NYC. Even if the manufacturer says it’s ok, the NYC DoB is now saying no. Maybe it’s ok for water heaters only. I doubt it, but I’m not certain. Venting of direct vented appliances must be made in accordance with equipment manufacturer requirements and building code. Read heater manual venting part. Or get licensed plumber specializing in these installations.

I’m sure experts will chime in, but yes, you can use PVC for mod-con boilers and direct vent them rather than going through a chimney. Others will chime in about whether you can vent to back yard, through an interior ceiling etc.
