Stucco siding to wood siding...
I would like to restore my home and take down the stucco siding and put on wood, just on the front of the structure (side is vinyl and I’m on a budget). Which companies can help with this? Do I need permits? Approx cost?

Hardiboard (fiber cement boards) allows the building to breath, it goes on just like clapboard, but it is fire retardant so your fire insurance will not go up. But to answer your question, if you are not in a landmark district you do not need a permit and how to choose a contractor? go to neighborhoods where there are a lot of wood frame houses, you will see them being restored and watch the progress of jobs for a while. You should eventually take the vinyl off, because it allows condensation to build up underneath and rots the wood frame, plus in a fire it gives off toxic fumes, accelerates the fire even more as well as melting and causing problems for firefighters. Choose a carpenter that specializes in clapboard and restoring old wood frame houses. They are generally around in the summer months and take winters off..

Consider hardiplank instead of wood. Smooth side out. Looks like wood planks but holds paint better and is more durable and less flammable.
