Street Tree Planting

The City is taking down the >100 year old Norway maple in front of our house as I write. I just filed an on line request for a replacement, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a private company that can apply for a permit and plant a street tree and how much this might cost. I’m fairly old and would rather not wait the number of years that the City takes to plant a replacement, IF I can afford to have the work done privately.

Yeah I have some trees that were cut 10 months ago and the stump is still here. I was very disappointed with the park department this year, they struck me as very unprofessional. Not sure why I would have picture people taking care of trees as nicer people. In term of efficiency they are pretty much similar to DOB. Urban Arborist is probably great but expensive. You could also rent the grinder and do the job yourself, then plant a new tree yourself without telling anyone. You can get any nursery to order the tree for you.

Yes, they left the stump; Parks will eventually grind it down, if I decide to wait. Does anyone have experience with Urban Arborists, on State Street. I’d consider having them plant a tree IF it will be appreciably faster than the City (AND if I can afford it).

Transworld, Thank you. Fortunately the existing tree pit is VERY large. The tree that was taken down (because it was hollow and dying) was probably the original from c. 1899 (at least it was very large in my 1940 tax photograph). I hated to see it go, but my wife was worried that it might fall on someone (and, when I saw that it was hollow for the entire length of the trunk, I had to concede that she was probably right).

Resident2, Thanks–I’ve already done that. I was just wondering if I could speed things up to any appreciable degree with having a tree planted privately and if the cost for that was prohibitive.

Pulling permit from the park department and planting alone you can do for $800 and more. Problem is you will probably have to take care of the stump and widen the tree pit, and that will be more costly. If you choose to request a tree from the park department now, you may have it next spring or fall, but I know they have a requests backlog and it may be longer…
