Sprinklers Question

If you have a brownstone that is 5 or more families, meaning technically commercial building that has sprinklers, if you change the CofO to a 3 or 4 family during a restoration can you remove the sprinklers as long as the minimum means of egress are maintained? I’d prefer not to have to put up a fire escape obviously, just trying to get a better feel for my options and how the DoB handles things like this. Any suggestions from builders/architects or those with experience would be much appreciated. thx

An added question for the fire code experts: would a house with no C of O (pre-1938) and used as a three family require sprinklers and/or a fire escape?

Figured the options werent going to be appealing. Can you change the sprinklers so that they are still in the proper locations but perhaps more aesthetically appealing? Thx for the help guys!!!

Changing the C of O would usually mean you have to add a full sprinkler system, so no on the removal.
