Should I bring my car to Brooklyn?

hey guys! In a dilemma here. I’m moving to brooklyn …for the 1st month I will subletting to get a better feel for the area and which neigborhoods in general I like. My sublet is on gold st. in fort green area right next to bk heights. It was difficult for me to find parking when i went down there and the parking lot they have for the apt complex ( avalon fort green ) is expensive. Any advice? I know I will be taking the train most of the time for work etc. but I’m thinking about if i go to look at other apts./groc shop/ leave for the weekend. I know there is zip car as an option too. However, I want the car for convenience, not to be a pain ( as in moving it on certain days bc of street cleaning). Brookyln people I need your help!

I used to street park for many years in that area. It’s a real pain if you _don’t_ drive to work daily, but keep regular 9 to 5 working hours, as the alt side is typically late morning/early afternoon. It only took two tickets/tow pound fees (+$300 each, 12 years ago) to prompt me to just rent off street parking; I never looked back since. You will begin to see that alt side parking dictates your daily and social routine and it is a question of priorities. If you will not be driving that often, consider a cheap outdoor parking lot in a remote area. There are plenty of NYC parking websites that post their monthly rates.

You can use ap’s to find and hold parking spaces, drive Smart Cars or Zip cars, or fill the cracks between cars with scooters.  You can also expect somebody like me to include the way-higher cost of transportation in to your estimate for work. I am also getting really tired of getting screamed at when I unload for a minute, or having my delivery drivers threatened on the quiet, leaffy, affluent streets of Brooklyn.  I have even been yelled at and threatened by drivers behind me on narrow streets, while I tow cargo behind my bicycle.

the best times of my life were when I did not have a car.  Of course, that meant living in places where we did not need a car – in our case it was Sunnyside, Queens.  I tell you that as I can equate Sunnyside to Brooklyn.  Your choice.  I will tell you this though, when we got to sunnyside, we had a car – I think I got rid of it after one too many parking tickets and I never missed it.  Learn the mass transit well and find out how to get deals on rental cars (we used to take the train out of the city for rentals – they get cheaper).

My advice to u is ditch the car.   I know this is not what u want to hear but in that part o B’klyn it is a nightmare to find street parking.  You will be living in an area where public transportation is within walking distance as are the shops, supermarket, banks and restaurants.   A parking ticket for alternate side parking is $45 ,for failure to pay/expired  munimeter is$35., doubled park, or parking at fire hydrant $115\. etc. with the possibility of being towed imminent.  This area has a high concentration of traffic agents and Police Officers whose job is to issue summonses.   Owning a car and living in NYC is honestly an expensive luxury.   If u still want to bring your vehicle, rent a parking garage.  Hope this helps.

I’ve had a car inBrooklyn for 45 years and it hadn’t been a big problem.. For the pastfew years I found a reasonably priced parking lot to use.

yeah, thats why I would want it. Does it depend what part of bk you are in too? I know its been a pain in some areas and other areas it is fairly easy.

25 years in brooklyn.  i love me my car for various reasons (weekend getaways, costco, etc).  we’re fortunately b/c my wife is on school hours so parking is rarely an issue.
