If you go the way of paint sprayer, it should be “airless”. Some painters will do it and I imagine it would look great. I also suspect that it will be much more expensive, what with masking, sprayer equipment, special expertise, etc. I still think a proper roller will do the job fine if you use a competent painter. I agree with citigyz. I had always been told that you could ONLY use alkid paint on a tin ceiling, but when I had a new one installed about five years ago our painter insisted that he could use latex paint over an alkid primer and he was right; no rust at all. I also agree with Cate about painting over the existing ceiling. It will look fine, especially if you used a flat paint, which minimizes any uneven surface.

I agree with Cate. I think my ceiling looks fine painted over even with paint chipped spot, old house charm. I disagree about the final coat. You should paint first with Alkyd primer. However, after that non-yellowing Acrylic (latex) is just fine. Never do the reverse. We did that with our ceilings and they still look great after 25 years.

BTW the lower layers are sure to contain lead paint, so be careful. If there are young children living in the unit, you need to follow lead remediation techniques, and children should not be present while the work is being done. (Nor should they be around oil based paint for that matter.) Tons of info about this online in government documents.

Very pretty and looks to be in great condition. If it were me, I would just hire someone to paint it. Be sure to use oil-based anti-rust primer and an oil-based paint as well, or you will have more problems with rust. (They should wear a respirator, you should do this only in the non-heating months when you can open all the windows and use a fan, and plan on not using that room much or sleeping on that floor for about three days.) Our tin ceiling had peeling spots like this. The previous owner just painted over it. Turned out fine. If you look very carefully, you can see the outlines of the previous peeling areas but it’s hardly noticeable.

Very nice looking ceiling. However the loss of paint makes it tricky to fix. If you just painted over it, it would leave a scab. So your options are to build up the surface carefully so it will not show or strip the whole ceiling. I would say try building the surface up, prime and paint the ceiling again.

I love historical tin ceilings but if it’s really beaten up replace it in-kind. The same historical patterns are readily available.
