REAL ESTATE HUNGER, NOT THE INTERNET, CLOSES POST OFFICES

I JUST SAW THAT THE BOERUM HILL POST OFFICE ON ATLANTIC AVENUE IS UP FOR SALE AND IS SLATED TO BE REPLACED BY A HOTEL. THIS POST OFFICE IS NEEDED BY THE COMMUNITY, BUT IT IS A PRIME PIECE OF REAL ESTATE. SO, IN KEEPING WITH THE BASELESS THEME THAT THE WIDESPREAD USE OF THE INTERNET IS THE CAUSE OF POST OFFICE CLOSINGS, ANOTHER PIECE OF THE COMMUNITY MOSAIC IS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK. REAL REASON: DINERO. POST OFFICE CLOSINGS ARE PART OF THE HIT LIST OF PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE UNDER THE GUN, ALONG WITH SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, FIREHOUSES AND PARKS.

When I lived in Boerum Hill, that Post Office was known more as the Customer Abuse Center.

Yes, while some places may not need post offices close, New Yorkers need a post office within walking distance, since, unlike other places, mail carriers cannot leave packages on your doorstep and expect them to still be there when you get home from work. This post office will be replaced somewhere. While the sale of the building is obviously motivated at least in part by real estate prices, I find the notion that the Internet DIDN’T kill the post office to be laughable. I used to mail all my bills, now I only mail the few I can’t pay online…as is true for vast numbers of people.

That branch will have to be replaced – it serves the entire 11217 zip code & cannot be done away with. Parcel pickup, registered letters, etc. have to be dealt w/ for the households in that zip.

The need to preserve neighborhoods and relevant structures is not advanced by random wishes for the old days. Post offices are largely irrelevant. The government should be selling them; there are way too many. A reflection of the old idea that each town and or zip code had to have its own post office. Whether or what should/could/might replace them is a debate worth having. The government should not contribute to the destruction of neighborhoods, as it did on East 12th street in Manhattan by selling development rights to the post office to add insult to the injury of the destruction of the neighboring 150 year-old St Anne’s church in favor of a hideous 27 floor dorm.
