Rats or squirrels in the ceiling?

Hello, For the past week I’ve heard rodents in the first floor ceiling (2nd floor floor) and the basement ceiling (first floor floor)- no evidence of entry anywhere (and I’ve checked throughly everywhere) Is there any way to tell if it’s rats or squirrels without actually seeing them? Thanks, Doug

How many floors are in your house and which floor are you hearing them? Unless you have apartments with kitchens on every floor, I have found that rats won’t go through the trouble of climbing to a higher floor too far away from their food/water/exit sources. Squirrels on the other hand have a propensity to use the trees (if any are surrounding) to gain access through the facia or open brick, etc to nest. They are highly destructive and will chew through support beams to burrow. Your best bet is to get a good animal control/pest control company to come and advise you and then get someone to seal up the entry points.

There is probably no way to detect whether you have rodents in your house without actually seeing them. You can guess if you hear some sound. But it is always better to take precaution and get a good pest control company to take care of these menaces. Hiring a professional pest control company that provides services at affordable rates is the best solution.

my bet is if they are climbing the walls, they are rats. my buddy has squirrels in his house on LI right now and he can see how they got in – through the soffit. if you can not find an entry point above ground, I suspect rats. you will need pest control. steve

You probably need pest control anyway & a good company would be able to identify what you have. Try Empire on Court St.
