Property Line/Ironwork

My neighbor recently had ironwork installed around a roof extension, I assume to put a deck on it. (We have the same ironwork on our extension roof, but no deck yet.) The problem is, he welded it to mine instead of making the turn and going to his exterior wall. This neighbor has a history of shoddy repairs that lead to problems. For example, he replaced his sewer main, but neglected to pay for replacing the section under his stoop. This led to his sewer leaking into my basement for almost 5 years. In addition, he did some roof drain work in his extension roof, which leaked, and revealed that he was in MY extension roof, not his. My inclination is to keep the property line clear, and to demand he remove his ironwork from mine. Thoughts?

That’s what I would call shoddy. Sounds like a cheap schlub. I would request removal to avoid any problems in the future given past history of his improvements.

Did either of you seek permits for the work? While it is hard to envision exactly what you are describing, it sounds like he is using your structural supports to provide the base for future decking (or is this some sort of railing). If he has done the former, I would imagine what you have installed were not engineered to support two decks. So yes, I would speak to him and ask that the connections be removed. Othes might have opinions on what to do if he refuses. To the extent he has encroached on your property, could you just remove the bolts? If you have both done this without permits it doesn’t give you much leverage vis a vis department of buildings. But if you did pull permits you could complain to them.
