Nightmare electrician

How is it possible that a electrican can rewire an entire brownstone and says he can’t wire the electrical components needed for my new gas furnaces. Should not this been done by the plumber?Is this just incompetency or what? Now my contractor has to hire someone who can. Yes he did pull permit to do work.

Master Plumber, precisely what I said on my first reply – depends on agreement. However, you will agree that if the job is to lfurnish and install’ a boiler for the plumber to then say (long after the contract is signed) ‘well, the electric is not included’is at best disingenuous…

If installer cannot design complete system including pumping, piping, sizing, controls, sequence of operation and so in, then this installer must not be contracted to do the job. Because the job he will do will not be complete. Sorry for these pictures. It was not my intent but I cannot get them off.

“Don’t lose the point that if the plumber agreed to install the boiler, the electrical work is included, whether it is done in-house or a seoarate electrician (hired by the plumber as part of the package).” You’re probably right, but let’s not guess at what a contract’s terms are or any other agreement between a client, a contractor, and his subs.

Sadly, grandma is retired. Don’t lose the point that if the plumber agreed to install the boiler, the electrical work is included, whether it is done in-house or a seoarate electrician (hired by the plumber as part of the package). It is not about who does what but what is or is not included in a fair price (by a decent contractor…)

I get called in by a couple of electricians, plumbers, and mechanical contractors to wire boilers all the time. Control wiring is a specialized field and improper wiring can either not work properly or actually damage equipment. I am glad that your electrician admitted that it was beyond his skill set, rather than spending endless time making a mess of things. This is especially true of high efficiency boilers which must be programmed properly at start up. Here is a partial view of a Viessmann that I installed last year…as you can see concords grandma might have had a hard time wiring this up

Wiring for boilers and other HVAC equipment is something of a specialty. A lot of electricians don’t want to touch it and many plumbers just don’t as a rule. Piping for heat and hot water and wiring those appliances to the appropriate thermostats, pumps, relays, aquastats, remote (stairwell) power switches, zoning devices, low water cut offs, etc. is a skill set all its own. My company does it in-house and has for years, but before we did we used to hire an outside electrician who new what he was doing. Then he retired and his sons just didn’t have the chops, both licensed electricians. You should think about hiring Concord’s grandmother.

Who did you hire to install the boilers? If you hired a plumber and got a price for the installation (or furnish and install) then the plumber has to install and test (including the water, gas and electrical work needed). Otherwise you would have paid a plumber to deliver a boiler? It all depends on the ‘agreement’ but think about it; without electicity the boiler won’t work (so clearly the plumber contemplated it). Hopefully this is not the typical ‘gotcha’ event…to get more money. Obviously the electrician (separetedly hired for other work), if licensed, is capable of wiring a boiler (my grandmother ca do it!) but you may not have hired him/her to do that…i would think it is in the plumber’s package unless otherwised agreed up front.

Any time I’ve had a boiler replaced, it seems that the plumber brings in their own electrician.
