Mitsubishi City Multi Review

We installed the Mitsubishi City Multi in our brownstone duplex and I wanted to report after the freezing temperatures that it’s been great. Worked great in the heat of August as well. I was concerned about heat in particular but do feel those concerns were unwarranted.

Hi steam_man– To answer your question directly– no not yet, but my GC has assured me he has and can do the job…. More on that later, perhaps in another post. The above floor plan is really a compilation of an incremental HVAC installation strategy. So, we may not use every compressor shown, may swap air handlers, or may even go with a city-multi “S series.” The diagram basically serves to calculate heat loss and display ductwork locations. The key word above is STRATEGY. I’m gonna start with the MXZ-5B42 driving only blowers on my second floor, and see how it goes. Truthfully, I have been told that this single unit (3.5 ton) could drive the two floors I need heated and cooled– but I’m skeptical. But, this unit will give me a chance to install, and more importantly, feel various air handlers– from 12-24k BTU, PLUS get the ductwork installed while the framing in my house is “open.” Now, I have heard as many opinions on what, where, and how to install heat pumps as there are settings on a thermostat (little joke there!) The first thing one needs to get over is the reticence in this geographic area to heat pumps in general. I know your feelings on this, and obviously don’t dispute your views. I’m going through an educational process for a large investment, so I’m trying to see all sides of the issue before I “pull the trigger”– but in the end there are several physical, financial and other considerations which are driving me towards heat pumps, although the general consensus seems to be that they are still risky in this geographical area. Since there are so many varied opinions, and I STILL have not found a dealer willing to physically show me a site with a Mitsubishi installation, I’m gonna do this piecemeal with my GC. There are only three things which have been consistent about a heat pump installation with knowledgable people I have talked with suggest: 1) In this area (NYC, Brooklyn) Mr Slims will need a supplemental heat source on cold days — City multi, or Hyper heating models will work at low outside temps but are expensive 2) Install more cooling BTUs upstairs, as hot air rises in the summer — There are simply more hot days than cold days in this area, this drives the system decision 3) For short runs, simply use the largest duct possible, no need to worry about static pressure — the whole SP thing could drive you nuts Now I have dozens of other comments, some may be helpful to others– so I’ll post as time sees fit.. Hiya sleestack- First let me say that steam_man and others on this blog have been generous with their comments and opinions on this– and I would like to thank them. However, in my case, everyone I ask about heat pumps has a different opinion. And I’ve asked a dozen people, HVAC pros, GCs, Mitsubishi Reps, and my brother in law (well that’s kinda a joke, but he does work for Siemens in HVAC.) Sizing the units isn’t that tough– but real world observations on how they are working through the cold snap are hard to come by. What would be helpful is the model numbers of the blower units and condenser units, and what’s hooked up to what. We can find BTUs etc, from the model numbers. Also if possible the aprox size of the rooms each blower (air handler) is blowing into. THANKS!

I am happy to try to answer questions here, though I have to caution you guys that I left the technical details to others and therefore don’t readily have access to (or necessarily understand) the details about things like how many BTUs, tons, etc. The house is a 4-story brownstone with a partially finished cellar, so figure about 4,000 square feet total. There are 3 condensing units on the roof and two air handlers per floor (all concealed in a dropped ceiling except in the cellar where there is one wall mounted unit). If you have specific questions (e.g., model numbers of units), please let me know, and I will do my best to answer.

Good to hear! My system will be started tuesday – ConEd had to dig a new line last week … We survived the Vortex on 2 space heaters, the house is pretty tight.

We also have City Multi as our sole source of heat. It did fine during the cold snap, though I find it works best with more typical New York winter weather (i.e., lows in the high teens and 20’s). While the house stayed comfortable when it was 5-10 degrees outside, the air coming out of the vents was cooler than it is when the outdoor temp is a bit higher, and it therefore took longer for rooms to come to the set temperature. It works fantastically for air conditioning, even on the hottest of days.
