Internet & Wireless Access

Any advice as to how to maximize internet/wireless access from front to back of a brownstone? We have an Apple router (I think it’s an AirPort Extreme) connected to the modem located at the rear of the house (centrally positioned) but get no service for my iPad or iPhone in the front (on any floor).

We have 3 Airport routers in our 3 story house. The main floor where the cable modem resides is connected to the primary Airport Extreme – the new tower shaped one; the garden level basement has an Airport Express in bridge (extend mode) connected to a whole house audio system, so it doubles as a repeater for the den and my home office down there, as well as the point of contact for Airplay so we can play music through the house system from the iPhone, iPad, or mac with iTunes. Then on the top floor we put our old Airport Extreme in the bridge (extend) mode as well. The bedrooms are up there with the kids’ laptop computers and our son’s Xbox. We have excellent coverage throughout the house which is 50 feet deep and all plaster, tin ceilings, and brick-filled walls. Before we did that we always ran into problems when you weren’t on the main floor or up in the bedrooms especially. The thing about bridge modes is you need no cables. Just plug it in and put it in bridge mode (called extend mode on Apple) and it bridges wirelessly to the primary router. So they are easy to setup and cheap when bought used on ebay.

You can also run some sort of powerline ethernet solution to a second router (like what bedstuytownhouse posted) if you find that just using a extender isn’t enough. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=powerline We do that at home with an apple airport as the main router then an airport express as the secondary router, both of them connected via a powerline device. It can get a little technical to set the routers up correctly (the powerline devices are usually plug and play) but there are lots of people out there in the same boat: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4967888 If using two routers one might need to be in something called “bridge mode.”

We also have the apple airport, centrally located on the bottom floor. So this may be a good solution.

I had the same trouble in our four story b’stone but did not know there was anything you could do to correct it with respect to the upper floors until coming across this posting. The wifi signal goes in a triangular shape. If you are outside that shape you will have a difficult time capturing the signal. I suggest getting a Netgear extender that is ONLY an extender. Try to place it in an outlet in the center of the house. If you still have a problem get http://www.brooklyntechguy.com/. He will solve your problem.

We were having trouble between floors and my husband just bought a signal extender (not sure of the technical name). It boosts the signal from the source router and our devices connect to whichever one is closer/stronger signal.

We have the same setup, but our modem and Airport Extreme are located in the front garden floor room. The computer that hosts the wi-fi software is in the front room on the parlor floor. So far, we haven’t had any problems with wi-fi access for any computer anywhere in the three-floor house. We don’t have iPads though and our iPhones are not set up to use the local wi-fi network.
