How do I get a stray cat out of my garden?

There’s a neighborhood cat that is always in my garden. The cat has a collar so I think it might belong to someone. Any tips on how to get rid of the cat? Winter is coming, so I’m hoping it will go away then. But in the final few days of decent weather, I would like to be outside without having the cat around. And I’ve asked around the neighborhood and no one knows who the owner of the cat might be. Looking for options before possible catching the cat and calling animal control.

I’m with the ones who are appalled at a roaming cat. If my dog were going into neighbors yards, shitting and digging in their plants, I’m pretty sure they would call the cops. Why is a cat different? We have a dog and cats, and the cats are not allowed out. A neighbor who insists on letting their fat housecats out is currently driving me nuts. The cats, who can barely manage the fences, have done a significant amount of damage to my garden (I saw it happen). Our large dog has come within about an inch of catching one of the cats a couple of times yet they still let them out. Our next step is trapping the cats if they keep coming over as the neighbor refuses to do anything about it. A motion-activated sprinkler would constantly be going off from all the squirrels, raccoons, and birds going through as well as my own dog who I don’t want getting hosed in our own yard. I am on mailing lists for lost pets and cats that are allowed outdoors are constantly going missing. All kinds of things can happen (aside from the damage they do), why risk it? The cats have done more damage to my garden than the other animals, which surprised me but I’ve seen them at it enough to know it was them.

Believe me the water solution I suggested earlier is the most painless way for all concerned, especially if you’re only dealing with one animal. The cat’s not hurt and if you have flowers in the vicinity, they get the occasional extra water spray and look amazing. We used this summer after two years of dealing with a constant parade of feral cats using the yard as a litter box after being fed by our neighbor. Literally dozens of them. We couldn’t send our kid out there to play without cleaning up first. I think catching a cat will be difficult.

While you’re at it don’t forget to shoot the birds, squirrels and raccoons that tresspass onto your property. If you see a mouse, rat or bat call Homeland Security and request a drone strike. Mosquitoes, flies, butterflies, bees, ants … they all want to enjoy the last days of warm weather but they should stay out of your property. What’s worst are all the dog turds on the side walks and tree pits, sometimes they even have the audacity to bark or dig a hole! Report the flea bags and their inconsiderate owners to AC.

Check the collar of the cat. Either attach a note or speak to the owner. However, the cat may be one of the unfortunate cats dumped by people when they move. If so, it may be homeless. CMU – domestic cats are a major killer of birds. While I wouldn’t want anyone to kill your cat, I hope this thread has given you a more balanced view of how people feel about cats being allowed to wander at will through a neighborhood. It is not cool.

Thanks for the suggestions. Especially the one about putting a note on the cat. I’ll catch it next time it’s in the yard and will attach a note to it’s collar. And I think it’s my right to not want a cat in my backyard. If you have a pet, you need to understand that not everyone wants your pet around.

@cmu birds are rodents with wings in my opinion. but really, out of everything i said that’s all you responded to? no, i had a cat growing up and as an adult – but not in years. i’m just a considerate neighbor.

ditmarsm: YOU said “It’s unfortunate if a cat winds up at a kill shelter..” that’s close to ‘condoning’ to me, but then, I don’t tolerate intolerance well ;). no-permits: birds are not rodents. Also, you don’t seem to know much about cats, and obviously hate them. Was it a childhood trauma?

@cmu it’s incredibly rude that you let your cat roam. their pee kills plants and grass and it stinks. it’s an annoyance in general. if it were my yard, i’d box the cat up and bring it to the shelter or a park.

lol, you sound like quite the nut job. I’m not sure where I’ve said anything about condoning the killing of animals. I just don’t appreciate the cat smell in my yard or my dog barking or trying to get to the yard because there is an uninvited cat there. It’s really not your decision to make that a cat is good for anyone’s kids, “doesn’t bother anyone” and I shouldn’t have to “shoo him away”, keep him off your neighbors property to begin with. It’s just common courtesy.

bedstyreno: Why let my cat roam? Because he’s happy. He does not bother anyone by roaming, and, if he does, feel free to shoo him away. He’s obviously not a feral cat. No cat ‘kills several birds a week’…mine has never killed one. Even if he does, isn’t it natural? If you have kids, you should be happy to have an animal around, it’s good for them to be comfortable with them. What about squirrel poop, bird droppings, slug slime? It’s a garden. It has stuff. ditmars: onto other people’s property!? You’re so attached to your property that you think it’s ok to kill an innocent animal that wanders on to it? Wow, I don’t know whether to feel sorry or horrified. But I’ve been warned. I had no idea of the intolerance around me.

If you have a cat why would you let it roam freely? Cats that roam freely are major problem for birds. Most of those cats can kill several birds a week. If the cat does indeed have an owner, I would love to talk to him/her- which I’ve tried to do. I just want it off my property, since I’m allergic and children play in the yard and I don’t want them playing in cat piss/poop. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have never let any of my cats roam, only let them out in my back yard under supervision, and have managed to leash-train the last two. I think the danger posed by feral cats, raccoons, and some people is too great. That being said, there’s a pretty well-established tradition of letting cats roam freely and, while I don’t agree with it, I’d _never_ contemplate trapping one of my neighbors cats, although I might chase it.

I’m not sure why people think it’s ok to let their cat wander into other people’s property. If you have a cat, keep it on your property. It’s unfortunate if a cat winds up at a kill shelter because of an irresponsible owner.

I’m also pretty disturbed that catching a cat with a collar, which is an obvious indication that the cat is someone’s pet, and taking it to ACC, which is a kill shelter, was even suggested as an “option.”
