Greene ave- 900 block

Hey guys, i have an offer in on a 2 fam on the 900 block of greene. It is just east of malcolm x blvd and a few blocks from the j train. Complete reno and seems like good work done too…its a 3 bed over 2 bed. My question is it seems like a beautiful block but wanted to get some insight into someone who lives very close to there. i have drove by it and walked around in daytime and nighttime and it seems like an up and coming part of bed stuy. Malcolm x (which is the cross street) seems like it has great oppurtunity to have a ton of action in terms of lots and lots of store fronts..any insight? Thanks in advance

wow annep, that makes me feel extremely uneasy…I am a single 30 year old man and think I should be alright by myself. Hopefully in a couple of years from now, it gets safer when I think about raising a family. Also that’s great metalwork that you got into ps11\.

Summertime is the real time to view any block…this is the hood, so go with you instinct. I remember when Clinton Hill was “sketchy” and Bed Stuy was totally hands off. Now folks are out there subdividing Bed Stuy. People look at those that bought in those areas over the last ten years as geniuses, when in fact they were simply buying what they could afford in an up and coming market. With regard to development near Green Ave. Businesses and renters are attracted to blocks closest to subways for obvious reasons, so I suppose there is some potential there.

we lived on Chauncey between Malcolm x and Stuyvesant for 2 years,I have many customers in the area. Malcolm x is scary, especially at night. the schools are wild. lots of killing on Malcolm x and chauncey when we were there. we moved closer to Norstand, much better. We got our 5 year old into PS11 Amazing school. love Greene ave tho. Be careful

I second what kacuri999 said — it’s definitely block by block. Despite the rising house prices, too, the police activity in my area by Lewis & Jefferson remains high. I would say there are police helicopters active in the area at least several times a week and just last night there was a body dumped across from my friend’s brownstone on Hancock and Malcolm X – so make sure you do research and are comfortable with what you’re getting into.

I live nearby, by Marcus Garvey. We bought 3 years ago and are very happy. Bed Stuy is very block by block, but then again you have to go with your instincts. When we were first looking everyone advised us to not go further east than Nostrand (they themselves all live west of Nostrand). I’m glad we didn’t pay too much attention, because we love our block. We did the same as you, walked around at day and night, tested the commute, etc. If you do buy the house, please say hello to your neighbors. It’s one of the nicest things about Bed Stuy, and I’m afraid many newcomers don’t do it.

also, how do u think it stacks up to other parts of bed-stuy and future growth in that neighborhood
