Glass for new entry door?

Help! What to do?our entry doors are being replaced with completely new ones. the carpenter isn’t sure what glass to use. we have taken out the inner vestibule door, so this one door is doing all the heavy lifting in terms of keeping weather out. we have the option of including the original beveled glass. so it could be adding an inner pane with argon (how thick? low-e? laminated? shatterproof?) OR one thick pience–or one piece made of two thinner ones (any benefit to that?). and oh–we want it to be frosted (lightly) for privacy. any and all suggestions MUCH appreciated!

and also, do not order glass that has been frosted on the outside. that stuff does not stay clean. if you get lami, you want it frosted on the inside. the glass guy will know what I am saying if you tell him. I do not know the name. Steve

ok, a few options here. rick says tempered and he is correct but you still have options. now, you can put a 1″ bevel in if you go a little ticker with the glass. I try to steer my customers away from tempered or tempered/bevel because of the turn around time. and if it is tempered with a bevel it is pricey. the other option is laminated safety glass. 1/4″. it has some heat loss resistance to it. it is also hard to break – it can be cracked, but someone really has to hit it hard several times to get in. I prefer the laminated. also, if someone cracks it, it does not break it cracks, so it is not like you have to have the window guy out that day to replace it. it is also easy to get, fast. most economical. you can go with the double pane, but by law they must be tempered. so now you add to the turn around time. and it one breaks it is a headache. Pricey too, an 18″x48″ will run about $300 tempered, maybe a tad more. no bevel. in so far as having to use laminated or tempered glass, it is required by code. If you have children I would definitely adhere to the code as watching the old plate glass break into big heavy pieces is a scary thing (for anyone, never mind the little ones) and you do not want to be under it. Glass has to be tempered. It can be beveled and frosted up to .25″. You can go with laminated ( less expensive ). Tempered glass to size is a special order and takes a couple weeks to receive. As far as keeping the cold out, argon may work a little better but is thicker and not beveled. You should be fine with regular tempered glass. Be sure that your door is leakproof by adding door sweeps and weatherstripping.
