Gas Heating Rates

We just converted from oil to gas heat. Our national grid bills still list our rate as “1A Res. Non-Heat. Should I tell the gas company we are now using gas for heat? Will the rate go up? The National Grid rep on the phone said the rate would change but the price would not go up. I didn’t understand that. Also, I was approached by Ferrantino Fuel, saying they would give us a lower gas rate. Has anyone tried this? In general, I am thrilled with much lower heating costs this winter. Thanks, Erin

Your rate for heat should be 1B (Res. Heating). I’ve tried to get a list of rates out of National Grid before but didn’t get the info I was looking for. I think 1B is lower. I get both 1A and 1B bills and can tell you last month’s the Gas Supply Charge was a hair lower on my 1B bill. I can’t see the delivery charge for cooking gas and have no idea if it’s lower or not. I haven’t tried Ferrantino Fuel, their ESCO business looks to be FFC ENERGY LLC. and they are on the list of current suppliers. I tried an ESCO years ago and my bill went up. I had to do a fair amount of legwork each month to verify if I was getting taken or not — and when I tried to cancel (they make you do it on the phone) I was met with boiler room tactics. The only reason I tried going with an ESCO back then was because it was so hard to get good info — there are over 100 different suppliers all saying they are going to save you money. But my experience of higher bills is normal; In 2012 the Public Utility Law Project of NY found that ESCO gas customers paid an average of $235 more over a 2-year period.

It could be marking your service as non-essential since it’s not the heat. I’m guessing that if there were a service problem in the winter, homes with gas heat would get priority over those with electric or oil. Of course, I could be wrong.
