you need someone with an old style stick welder. that is what they use to thaw pipes. sadly, i sold mine and now only use wire feed. Steve

In a toilet tank, you can try to create a siphon from the reservoir of water into the overflow tube using a short piece of rubber/plastic tubing. OR You can stick a toothpick or something under the tank flap so that it leaves a little space for water to trickle out and drain the tank periodically so that it refills a few times during the day.

_@daveinbedstuy_ Unfortunately, that is not the case in our parlor floor bathroom. The chase is right at the rear wall and the toilet is adjacent to the chase. I guess that the toilet piping can freeze after it diverges from the lines that go to tub and the sink. So our toilet can be frozen even though we have running hot and cold water in the sink and tub in that bathroom and in the tenants’ apartment above.

I’ve got a bathroom on an extension over an unheated crawl space. Yesterday morning cold water pipes were frozen (toilet, sink and tub – another time years ago it was just the tub, the longest run from the heated basement). I put a space heater in the crawl space and opened a door to allow circulation of more warm air to the area and left faucets cracked open. By evening pipes thawed (fortunately no leaking burst pipes). Lows in the single digits predicted for Thursday, so will have to try the faucet drip prevention thing. re: toilet… found this online, might be worth a try… Toliet Trick: In cold bathrooms … it’s good to leave the toilet running to prevent pipes from freezing. 1\. Cut a 3-foot piece of yarn. 2\. Remove the toilet tank lid. 3\. Put yarn in water. Flush the toilet while holding the yarn underneath the flapper. Do not allow the yarn to flush down the toilet. It could clog the jet and wash-down holes. 4\. Drape the yarn over the tank’s edge and hold it in place with the tank lid. 5\. The running toilet keeps cold water moving through pipes. 6\. Remove string when danger of freezing passes.

Don’t need to, bob. Just needs to be at the sink or tub that’s furthest from the basement. There’s only one feed line running up there and opening one faucet keeps it running. And only need the smallest trickle

Even a light bulb near the pipes will help keep them from freezing if they’re not wrapped.

Can you get at the chase where they run up the building from the basement? If so, position a space heater of some sort directed up the chase. It will work.

We use machines that send electrical current through the piping and evenly warms the system to minimize the likelihood of bursting. Today, I’ve got three trucks in Brooklyn doing this for a list of people I may never completely get to. An ounce of prevention… Do the faucet-drip thing, people.

Open the taps, preferably all of them. It is the air pressure from expanding frozen water that bursts the pipes. Open all sink cabinet doors. Do you know where the point of freezing is? If so, gently warm the area with a hair dryer or hot towels. Or buy pipe heat tape.

Luckily my pipes are all situated away from outside walls and thus protected (as long as the heat is on in my house). I’ve heard many times that you can prevent less protected pipes from freezing by allowing a trickle of water to run in very cold weather. I don’t know what you can do once they’ve frozen. Perhaps you should shut off the water main coming into the house to minimize flooding if the pipes burst.
