Floor under kitchen appliances is higher than surrounding floor

In our top-floor kitchen, the floor is about 2″ higher under the sink, stove and fridge (galley style kitchen). Does anyone know why this is? I suspect it’s one of the previous owners many ill-informed DIY projects, he liked to make things up as he went along. I’d like to renovate the whole space, but I’m worried about what is under this ledge!

I’ve seen this often. Old coal cook stoves would have a cement base on the floor. It is about 2″ thick. You can bust it out and patch that area or put a whole new subfloor down.

2″ higher is about what I would expect from a mudset tile floor. Is it higher under the cabinets too? A common misconception is the floor would be stronger if made thicker by adding a layer of sand, cement and wire mesh. But often the thick layer cures incompletely, or inconsistently, and cracks, among other inconveniences when plumbing and electric outlets were established at lower altitude. And/or, because it it thicker, more pressure from expansion and contraction occurs, not less, causing tiles to pop loose. Perhaps only the parts of the floor were removed which had already failed, at that point, and which could be replaced, seemingly, without moving anything heavy or needing to buy another box of cheap, ugly tiles from Home Depot.

Was he trying to level out the floor for the appliances? sometimes the floor is so crooked that the stove / fridge adjustible legs wont extend out enough so you have to shim them up…

What kind of floor do you have — linoleum? Sometimes kitchens have hearths higher than the surrounding floor, and sometimes they had tile aprons around the sink, stove, etc. Or maybe this guy was running gas or water lines under the floor? Seems unnecessarily complicated though.
