Fire Escape For a two family
Hi Everyone, Do Two Family Houses need a Fire Escape? Downstairs has two entrances. One in the front and one in the back. The second floor just has to the front door and roof access. To get to the roof you need to use a ladder. We are connected to a house on one side. Thanks, Greg

Thanks, that helped. It’s a two family built in 1899 and will stay a two family.

If you are asking regarding a pre-existing two family under the old code, no. That would be grandfathered in. If you are creating a new two family, the DOB may well require a sprinkler system. If you are down sizing from an SRO or 3-4 family for example, do it under the old code and you may be able to take the fire escape off…… I hope this covers all scenarios of your question. It all depends……
