Electric Meter Stopped Working

Hi Brownstoners, Moved into the new house 2 months ago. When meter 2 (meter 2 is the basement level) reading was due, I called ConEd, gave the reading, no problem. Second month came around, called in meter 2 reading. ConEd informed us the meter 2 did not move from the previous month. We explained that’s probable since there is no activity there with the exception of an occasional light being turned on. Skeptical but trusting, ConEd accepted the (same) meter reading. Today, we discovered the meter disc is not moving. So…has anyone experienced a meter that does not work? We plan on starting a complete electrical upgrade within the next few weeks which will be filed. In the meantime, should we contact ConEd? Don’t want to open a hornet’s nest, but also don’t want any unnecessary headaches from ConEd. Thanks & Happy New Year to all.

peaceout

If the building was used as a one family the previous owner may have had the loads combined into a single meter, Con Ed should have a record of this. If you are going to do meter work then your electrician will file the job with them and the City, upon completion Con Ed will most likely change the meters anyway. Con ed already knows that there may be an issue and may want to change that meter. You don’t need to do anything further as long as your actions in the future are done according to NYC Electrical Code and Con Ed specs.
