Does anyone [Marie-Helene] know what this is?

I was repotting a root-bound plant & about half a dozen of these larvae crawled out of the dirt. Should I toss the soil? Are they harmful?

yes, just a grub and both Tinker and Seward are right..moles mean grubs and they are quite tasty fried up. if you think there are more in the yard, use what I believe is called Milky Spore to get rid of them. (Commenting all the way from Hong Kong)

They’re pretty big, so you might be able to do it by hand. If you don’t have a screen, just dump the soil on a piece of tarp or burlap, and use a small hand tool to spread and move it so you can pluck the grubs. The size and color make them easy targets.

You already received your answer, but since you asked me: yes, they’re beetle larvae. My guess is white grub, probably on their way to become June beetles. You definitely don’t want them in your house, so just pick them out and destroy them. They feed on roots and decaying organic matter, and are rarely a problem for plants unless you have a bad infestation. You don’t have to dump the soil; just screen it so all the larvae are removed.

they are grubs and grubs are beetle larva. someone told me that and in the same conversation they told me that if you have moles in your lawn you have grubs as moles eat grubs. not sure if the last bit is true – all heard a long time ago. I am not sure if they are harmful but whenever I dig and find them I get somewhat repulsed as though I had stumbled upon giant maggots. so there you go, now that I said that I will bet you toss the soil.
