DoB - how much access will they have to house when expecting boiler conversions?
We have to file for a boiler conversion (oil to gas) in a house we recently purchased. The house is a two family – but configured with a kitchen in the wrong place (3rd instead of 2nd floor) and an extra bathroom on the firs floor that was never filed by the previous owner. Question: When the DoB comes to the house to inspect the boiler etc (do they do this?), will they also walk around the house and see the existing violations (for which we will get fined)? Do they have free access to roam the house at will? The boiler is of course in the cellar/basement, the violations are on the first second and third floors of the house. We are considering taking out that bathroom and kitchen before filing for the boiler conversion – but I am not sure if this is necessary. Your thoughts are appreciated. We would like to avoid unnecessary work if possible of course, as we are on a tight budger.

For up to 6 apartments residence with no commercial establishment and boiler less than 650,000 btuhr input (I think size of boiler was increased but not sure) there is no need for boiler inspection, only plumbing inspection. And inspector will not write violation. He comes to inspect only the job done under the permit.

No they do not inspect the whole house! Just get the right licensed plumber/boiler specialist to do the job and they will file and handle all the inspections, by going in and out through the cellar hatch.
