DECKING lumber- Black Locust
I am building a deck & fence in my backyard. Has anybody used Black Locust wood for either decking or fencing? Does anybody know of a supplier for Black Locust? Apparently it is an indigenous hardwood that’s rot proof and a sustainable option to Ipe. I have read some great reviews & talked to lumber yards who rave about it but I’ve have not found anybody who has it in stock. If you have any leads or input about using Black Locust, please let me know. Thank you!

You could try Condon Lumber in White Plains. They have a large election of species and Locust is listed on their website.

Black Locust gets great reviews overall when it’s air dried. The board length rough is most commonly 6ft to 8ft max. I have talked with a few landscapers who highly recommend it for planters.

that has made me think of a lumber yard (mill) on Harned Road in Commack. maybe they have some – if they are still there and someone recently told me they were. I have not heard anyone ask about Locust in years. this stuff grew like weeds on LI. I only knew about it because an old man in the area had been building a dock and paid me and a friend to cut some down for him. He said they were straight and did not rot. it was all over the place on any unbuilt land on the south shore. Now this has me thinking maybe there is a market for it? You may want to speak with Suburban Mills. They have yards in Huntington, NY and Pennsylvania and Black Locust is their specialty. Good luck!
