Cicadas

Has anyone seen any cicadas yet?  I keep reading about the impeding 17-year biblical plague we’re supposed to be getting but haven’t seen any trace of it.  I also don’t remember ever seeing this before (other than the regular cicadas that come out every year), and I’ve lived in Brooklyn all my life.

  Maybe I was more impressionable as a youth, but the cicada invasion 34 years ago was pretty invasive.  You could pull hundreds of them off a single bush.

We’re on the northern edge of this brood, really, and also, there simply isn’t enough exposed soil for them to have laid eggs in.  Leave the boroughs and you’ll get some more exposure to them, but we’ll never see an invasion as bad as some of the cities in the heart of a brood.  Here’s a vid from nashville (brood XIX – 13 year cicadas – we’re brood II)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s0rlaeCcaI

I remember seeing 17 year locust when i was a kid in Va.  Not much day actions but you could hardly see the lights on the telephone poles at night.

Yes, in any given year it’s common to hear the chorus of cicadas throughout the summer and I rarely see them.  However, this year a breed of cicadas that only emerges once every seventeen years is emerging, and various news reports are describing it as if they will be blanketing the city like a locust swarm.  But so far I haven’t seen or heard any, and I don’t remember that happening seventeen years ago.

I’ve heard that they won’t really be an issue in the city. At the same time, a friend of mine dug up 8 grubs while replanting her vegetable garden a couple of weeks ago.
