Bat house in yard to combat mosquitoes?
Hi all, Wondering if anyone has ever used a bat house to deal with mosquitoes in the yard? It’s been suggested to me but I wondered whether it would be difficult to attract them in Brooklyn, whether they’re effective? And if it does work, whether I would be replacing one pest with another? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks, Mare-Helene, I might try that. A neighbor had one out front last summer and I thought it was rather lovely. Do you know if it’s fast growing? (I know that morning glory is considered a weed by many folks, though I like it.)

One way to attract bats to your garden without providing housing is to give them dessert: you can seed moonflower (ipomoea alba), a close cousin of morning glory that blooms at night. It’s an annual in our climes, but will self-seed. It’s a relatively short climbing vine, about 4-5′.

Thank for the feedback, all. Certainly looks like even free Wi-Fi isn’t going to get these critters to take up residence, so I’ll try to address the issue some other way.

both my father and uncle put bat houses in their yards on LI and offered all sorts of incentives like tax abatements and open buffets and the bats did not move in. I think they must have gotten a better deal the next town over.

I studied all the tips about bat houses, colors to paint, orientation, clear flight path in, etc. Three or four years later I took it down due to no bats.

Thanks for the recommendation, Renny. However, I would be leery hiring you again since you ignored my requests last summer to come back and fill in holes after doing a lawn installation.

It’s not a short-term solution. It may take years for bats to move in. It’s nice to do, and an environmentally-friendly thing to boot, but it won’t solve your backyard BBQ mosquito problem.

I tried a bat house but never got any tenants despite the fact that I see bats zooming around at dusk every day. I’d say it’s worth a shot but follow all the suggestions you can find on Google, etc. about how to make it inviting.
