basement gas leak
I have been noticing a while that my basement laundry room has a smell. I just could not pin point what it is. I asked my wife and friends to see if they smelled anything (gas) and they could not. Its been bothering me so I decided to buy the UEi gas detector and sure enough, it detected something near the gas meters pipes. (This is assuming I am using the device correctly) I tried the soap bubble test and it came out negative. I checked my gas usage the past 2 years and there has not been a spike/abnormal usage. So this might be going on since we bought the place 5 yrs ago. What should be my next steps? I keep hearing not to call National Grid because they might shut off my gas line. I understand if there was a noticeable leak, I would take that route but in case it is not. Should I just go with hiring a pro plumber to detect and fix the leak? who is responsible for the pipe going into the gas meters? Last but not least, any recs on a good plumber that can detect hard to find gas leaks? Any advice and leads would be greatly recommended

Gas work is the most regulated and restricted type of work. Anything to do with gas line must be done by licensed plumber and filed with dob. And I mean everything. Even testing of gas line must be filed. Jurisdiction of utility company ends at house gas valve outlet. They cannot do anything in the house beyond this point. All they test is just watch gas meter not moving. They cannot test gas line. All they can do is change meter in case it is defective. Or lock the meter and open it only after leak is repaired and gas is authorized by dob.

Since it’s a nearly imperceptible leak, call a plumber first who can do the same air pressure test ConEd/NatGrid will do, or perhaps spot leaks you might not (including the meter). I’ was recently told buy a plumber that pinhole leaks are common, and that few old lines pass a nat grid test– and when they don’t nat grid shuts off your gas till it does with a lock. Fixing it often means replacing every line in your house. In our apt building we didn’t have gas for 6 months as a result of a tenant freaking out and calling the fire dept and con ed. To be clear a brand new strong smell of gas means run don’t’ walk, but an ongoing light smell not detectable by others should be checked out but isn’t cause for hysteria. If you’re worried turn of your main gas valve until a plumber visits.

I had a similar experience, smell in the basement near the meters. I called coned, they come pretty quick, they found the meter to be defective and replaced it right away. Might want to contact Coned first

I had a similar issue this fall. I called to get the gas turned on for the house I purchased and National Grid found a gas leak and turned off the gas for the entire building. But there wasn’t just one leak but multiple leaks and we had to open the walls to find all of them. In a case with a gas leak it’s best to be safe than sorry. Call a plumber you trust to fix the issue and have him check for multiple leaks then call National Grid to test the line.
