Animal in parlor floor ceiling, how to remove?

I seem to have an animal residing in a corner of my parlor floor ceiling. About a week ago at 2am I heard loud scratching that stopped after 30 min. I thought maybe something was stuck in the chimney but we opened the upstairs cover and looked in and didn’t see any signs of an animal. On Saturday, it started at 7am and last night at 3:30am. The noise always comes from the same area and we haven’t heard any signs of it moving throughout other parts of the ceiling. When we tapped the ceiling with a long pole it stopped and started again after some time. There is a fluttering sound we’ve heard so we think it may be a bird or bat? but no chirping or other noises so we really don’t know what it is. Does anyone have any recommendations for pest specialists or advice on how you’ve dealt with this issue?

There have been a lot of people in my neighborhood (Slope) this year who have had raccoons in cocklofts & attics. If the ammonia doesn’t work, I’d consider bring in an exterminator.

I had the same issue, but it was in the crawl space between my roof and ceiling. What solved the issue for me was pretty simple – I just put an ammonia soaked rag up there, and the noises stopped. I think the smell/stinging of ammonia is unbearable for any creature in such a small, enclosed space. In your case, it’s a little more complicated as it’s probably not that easy to access that space between your floors. You’d have to cut out a piece somewhere to access it.
