We’re about to put a washer and dryer in the cellar. Preferably a gas dryer as we’ve heard it’s better. I’m new to all of this, and perhaps overlooking something. If people have any advice or anything to look out for, it would be appreciated.

  1. yes,the only thing that comes to mind in this is the venting of the dryer. we have our washer/dryer in the cellar and were luckily able to run the vent pipe through an old coal chute. but barring that you will have to break through to the outside for the vent. code states that a vent can only be 12′ long, if it needs to be longer you have to add a device to help the exhaust vent properly.

also, a tip: don’t vent the dryer in the front of your house: in cooler weather we get people banging on our door because they see the steam and think the house is on fire!

  2. you’ll want to vent the dryer to the exterior. it’s also very handy to have a utility sink and a table nearby. make sure the doors open on each unit open so that you can move things from the open washer to dryer if front loading.

  3. Gas dryers have specific venting requirements as they release CO2. I don’t know about a single family building, but in our coop, we were required to vent our gas dryers a minimum of 10 feet from any fresh air window, and that includes the neighbors. I found that the contractors who came to bid the job were unaware of this DOB regulation I know the reg because an idiot shareholder in our building called the DOB to complain about the vent below his window rather than work with the Board on it!
