I am considering replacing our existing (warping, crappy) wood decking with Timbertech “Reliaboard” decking. Anyone have any experience with this product? Pros? Cons? One complaint I’ve heard is that it really heats up a lot in the sun. OTOH, I hear it is easy to clean. Thoughts? Thanks.

  1. Ditto what Jock said about hidden fasteners. It’s an elegant look with no fasteners visible.

We countersink the decking screws when we face screw, because unlike wood, if you screw down too hard, the material mushrooms over the head of the screw, leaving a weird little lump? It takes us a little longer, but we like the results.

Oh yeah, forgot to say we also predrill pilot holes for screws. So every hole gets two operations before screwing.

We do a lot of docks and marine installs, and Timbertech stands up much better than pressure treated when exposed to salt air and sun.

  2. I put in Timbertech a few years ago. They have much nicer samples now. As said it is not structural so you will need more joists to carry the load. Send the money for the hidden fasteners. Do not screw though the board and bang over with their hole covering system. It does not look so great over time. Live and learn…

  3. thanks, bruce. I’ve seen samples. Wish it didn’t have all that faux grain. Just want to hear from people who have it how they like it. All the online reviews i found were by contractors who specialize in it. And yeah, suburban, not a rowhouse in sight on their website, but maybe I don’t care in the back of the house.

  4. This question would raise eyebrows in the suburbs.

You don’t know what Timbertech is like?

Timbertech is much more maintenance free. The material is uniform, and goes all the way thru, so you can pressure wash etc.

It is no stronger than wood, so it can be decking or hand rail, but not structural.

I guess the con part of the equation is its unnaturalness? How to compare Corian to stone? A technical miracle yes, but somewhat erzats.
