We had a new gas hot water heater/furnace installed about 5 years ago. It regularly has had issues every year which deprive us of hot water and/or heating for some period of time.

Is this normal? Should we schedule an annual check up? Or do we need to change plumbers?

I am afraid that we are novices at this…

  1. sounds like a combination boiler/ domestic water heater…5 years ago?… maybe a laars endurance or something similar..preventative maintenance is a great idea, but get a technician who is experienced with your specific make and model..if you need a free consultation, email me at errol832000@yahoo.com

  2. combo furnace/hot water heater?…I think that you mean boiler/ hot water heater…and yes preventative maintenance is a good idea

  3. I’m guessing this is a combination space-heating boiler and domestic water heater unit or some kind? Maybe a boiler with an indirect water heater?

  4. The most that people ever do to their HWH as far as maintenance is drain off a bit of water from the bottom. But most people never do that or anything else. Given that, the water heater will last roughly 10 years give or take a few months to a year. Typically the two things that go wrong with a conventional gas fired hot water heater is that the thermocouple goes bad or the tank just rots out at the bottom and fails. Yes, there are anodes that can be changed, but most people don’t do that, rather they replace the tank in 10 years.
