Our facade needs attention. It has survived the last 140 years and appears in good shape but the recent rains have caused some spalling in the carved detail in one spot. I would like to find a company that could stabilize the stone that is there and potentially even replace damaged pieces with new stone (rather than cement). Does anyone do this in Brooklyn (ever)? I have looked through the archives but haven’t found any references beyond ‘rebrownstoning’…

  1. There was an article about this in the July 4, 2000 New York Times. It showed a house on South Portland Avenue in Fort Greene that was being repaired using real cut brownstone. The article didn’t identify the mason working on the job though. Its worth reading if you’re thinking of using real brownstone.

  2. I know St. John the Divine used to have an apprentice stone carving program. I wonder if they could put you in touch with someone? It would be an interesting project for someone starting out and since it’s not a business, with all the overhead associated with businesses, you might get a decent price. Failing that, I sure just about any of the monument (as in tombstones) companies could reproduce the piece for you, but it would probably be more than the St. John’s apprentice program (but that’s just a guess).
