I am considering changing out the boards on my existing deck (not a roof deck). I can do either IPE or a composite material. I am not someone who will maintain a wood finish so I am leaning toward the composite material. is using the composite a really bad idea ?

  1. Composite manufacturers come and go…they usually go because of class action lawsuits against them for faulty products. Even Trex, the original composite, has had 2 or 3 class actions because of black mold and crumbling. Google around, and you will read some horror stories.
What man makes, man can screw up.
Ipe is about as maintenance free as a decking material can be.
If you do choose a composite, you will probably have to set some new joists because most or all composites require a joist spacing of 12″ OC.
