Anyone know?
Poncirus trifoliata
Often planted to discourage trespassing. Big ouch from the thorns. There are a number planted at BBG along Washington Ave. Another bigee at corner of Adelphi and Lafayette. Nice fragrance from flowers in spring and pretty little ornamental oranges in late summer.
That’s it, Arkady. Thanks. I hope you find your sod.
It is Trifoliate Orange. We have it here in Talladega, too. I think it was grown for the lovely fragrance of the flowers. Those thorns are nasty buggers. Fruit not good.
I think most commercial trees are grafted varieties w/o thorns… For obvious reasons. 😉
Yes, saw that drawing when I googled “bitter orange” Images. Still no thorns.
and botanical drawing with detail of the flowers: http://fashiontribes.typepad.com/.a/6a00d834515e6669e201157242792e970b-400wi
seems like the petals are a little thicker than what you’ve got, but hard to say.
I originally thought it might be bitter orange but the preponderance of photos never showed the thorns.
shot from a regular orange tree, w/ thorns.

(and seed-started oranges often if not always have large thorns)
