Hi there. Question: What would the required framing stud size be for external walls in a new building in NYC that is 5 stories high? Is it 2×4 or 2×6? Thanks much for your help.

  1. 5 stories high and new would be concrete and structural steel.

Probably approximately 6″ heavy gauge framing steel for your exteriors and 3 5/8″ for your interiors.

This brochure gives you some common new construction methods and dimensions for steel construction with masonry veneers.

  2. A number of issues here, biggest one being that you’re building with wood, forget about the size for now. Wood stud construction, new code = Type 3 or Type 5 construction class. Type 5 is not allowed within the fire district, which is all of Brooklyn. Type 3 cannot be used for residential construction of more than one or two families, and is further limited to 3 stories if no sprinkler system.

  3. What are you building that is 5 stories tall out of wood studs? You will find that to meet the energy code will require a thicker stud than needed structurally unless you are going to use spray foam for the insulation.
