Do Lawyers have to inform the client when the retainer is used up, or can they just go on without notice and hit you with a final bill?

  1. thanks for the info. I didn´t receive any cost update over 6 months. I also blame myself for not asking. Another expensive lesson.

  2. The State Bar requires lawyers to notify clients of the rights, which inlcudes the right to an itemized bill at “reasonable intervals.” That bill should reflect the costs incurred.

  3. Most lawyers will send you a monthly invoice against the retainer. You will get a zero balance bill showing the remainder and sometimes they will ask you to replenish retainer as a line item in an invoice. They should also itemize the hours they worked on your behalf.
