Paint Over Plaster -- How?
We’ve removed panel molding (and are keeping picture & crown moldings) from plaster walls, which have many coats of paint on them. Don’t want to re-plaster. it’s not that fancy an apt. We’ve removed panel molding (and are keeping picture & crown moldings) from plaster walls, which have many coats of paint on them. Don’t want to re-plaster. it’s not that fancy an apt. Just want to even out in order to fill the holes & paint. Any advice? Topping compound? Reccos for someone who can do this w/o replastering? Cost? Need to do a quick job. We’re ready to paint & on a tight schedule.

If you need to skim-coat a large but stable area, and want to do DIY, use joint compound, but mix it with about 40% water, apply it with a thick paint roller and skim it with the largest joint compound knife you can find (12″ maybe). Don’t sand. scrape high spots with the knife, and do about several layers in each direction.
Use joint compound. it’s the easiest to sand down.
