After spending about $6,000 on oil in calendar year 2010, (I know, crazy right?) I am looking to convert to a gas boiler system. New York State /National Grid has a program called HEAP, Home Energy Assistance Program that I’ve applied to to offset some of the big cost of doing this but they require the work to be done by a plumbing company that is an approved vendor for this program. Anyone know a reputable plumbing company that fits the bill? Or should I just forget about the 2 or 3 grand I would get thru this program and just hire my guys John Hlad and crew which gave me an estimate of $12,800. I shouldda been a plumber, right? Thanks all!

  1. Thanks. They just faxed a friend of mine who has a fax a list of approved vendors that I’ll pick up from him this weekend. Seems like a good program. The maximum benefit is $6,000- so will cover approximately half of the cost of the conversion.

  2. I am sorry that I can’t answer your question re other plumbers; John Hlad is my plumber too and I think he is pretty standard re prices. But I can tell you that you are doing the right thing going forward. Natural gas prices have diverged big time from Heating oil, as you know, but this will continue to be the case for sometime to come as more shale gas comes to the market. I wonder if National Grid has some approved vendors/plumbers associated with their program against whom you can compare John. Good luck.
