Hi –
I’m thinking of adding a wood planter (approx. 15′ x 2′ x 2′)to my backyard. It doesn’t seem that much more than a simple (yet fairly strong) box with some lining in it to prevent rotting. I called a few places and they basically said that it would be over $2k to get 3 ready-made ones of 5ft wide each. Seems like a lot for a box… Does anyone have experience in making them by yourself or a recommendation on a cheaper alternative? Thanks
Thanks to all for replying! I think i’m going to take the plunge and put those two left hands to use!
we purchase 6 planters for our deck 36x16x16 from DiamondTeak.
they have different sizes and i know they do custom sizes though ours were all just off the shelf.
i found them on ebay but you can email them at kevin@diamondteak.com
Custom planters can be made to almost any size or shape using various types of materials but they are quite pricey for residential use because of its contemporary design, durability, and high quality. Since some of us don’t really need a commercial grade planter for our plants, we can also make our own custom planters at home. In doing so, we need to use our creative minds to produce an elegant indoor or outdoor planters that will enhance the beauty of our plants. One of the most commonly used materials for commercial planters is wood.
Depending on what type of construct you desire for your planter boxes, if good lasting quality is desired then you should have the inner structure box constructed for you and then you could dress the outside with whatever you desire be it wood (IPE, Cumaru, Cedar)or composite.

Good luck with your project.
You could make these yourself very easily. We made ours and a few weeks after saw this post on doorsixteen and hers were much simpler, and pretty much the same size you are thinking of: http://www.doorsixteen.com/2010/08/16/attack-of-the-16-foot-planter/
We are planning to make raised beds by putting four posts in the ground and nailing boards to them. I would imagine you could do something similar to make simple boxes. We’re hoping to get the boards cut to size where we buy them. But if not, it’s a pretty simple matter to make a few cuts with a table saw or ask a handyman to do so.
that’s a bit of money. What kind of wood are they made out of and do you have a drawing? We can make anything out of wood.

That’s a great idea – thanks!
You could probably make something attractive with stacked railroad ties; they’re pretty cheap.
