We moved into a recently renovated brownstone that does not have central air. We’d like to invest in a system and are trying to decide on the best one, both for cost, energy efficiency and performance/asthetics.

We got a quote from All Mechanical for the Mitsubishi Ductless system and Space Pak that came out even for each system. Does anyone have any guidance on whether one is better than the other?

The Mitsubishi units seem more energy efficient because it is zoned, but the downside is you have to change the filters every two weeks or so during peak usage. I don’t like being able to see the units, but they have models that can now be concealed behind vents.

The Space Pak is appealing because it is invisible, and All Mechanical swears that when installed right, they don’t make a swooshing sound. We’ll still have to have some visible ductwork in our house though, which I’m not super thrilled about.

Finally, I need to source one or two other quotes. Any references for good HVAC professionals?

Thanks!

  1. I got a Daikin mini-split system where the units are “invisible” because they are installed in a ceiling behind sheetrock. There has to be an access panel for maintenance. Having and making these spaces could be challenging, esp if its already renovated. MIne were installed as part of a gut reno.

I got the Daikin because I didn’t like the visible units of a Mr. Slim. It looks like I have central A/C with slim ducts.

The interior Daikin units work well, are very quiet. The condenser outside is amazingly quiet. Cost was pretty high but don’t regret it.

    Good luck.

  2. We would be happy to provide you with a proposal for a mini-split system such as the Mitsubishi Mr. Slim or City Multi systems. Please feel free to click on my name above to find our company websites where you can locate our contact information. Congrats on your new reno!

  3. we installed an LG system last year after much research. They are VERY quiet- but also too big- even with designer panels- but i am a pureist- my husband thinks they are fine. Be carefull if you live in a landmarks area- althought we got approval from landmarks and LPC after much work, pictures and help from our architect- we have current issue with the parts that vent out- they won’t approve it and it was too expensive for us to remove- good luck and check references!!!! We also had to have the system electric re-wired with sheilds due to signal interference with the firehouse nearby- the things turned on and off. Good luck and move cautiously!
