In investigating ants, i saw some dirt coming from this sewer-like cap about 3 feet off the ground. Took out my wrench and “unscrewed” it, but it just fell out. The hole is filled with dirt/sand/brick chips.

Previous owner’s contractor did renovations, but i’m perplexed as to why fill this with sand and what is the purpose? Should I clear this out and cement this over? Why would they leave the cap when parging the chimney?

Thanks for your help!

  1. thanks yes, parged brick. interesting theory about the vent. it certainly sounds reasonable. lime and sand seems dead on after feeling it.

  2. …that is assuming that is a brick wall or chimney covered with stucco??

  3. fresh air vent? help with draft? The sand and brick chips might just be the mortar from the interior of your wall. If building was built prior to 1920, the mortar is just lime, sand and water. The threaded plug just happened to be the right size to stick in the hole.

  4. Master Plvmberi dont think i am able post another pic on this thread. Basically if you go outside to the backyard, look at chimney, its at hip level. House is from 1905. That cap is not threaded, just sits in the brick hole.

  5. Thanks mopar. This plug is outside, is it supposed to be filled with all this stuff? There’s only a gas boiler that vents through the chimney.
