i want to make the roof accessibility better by adding a stairway up to the roof instead of the “ladder and roof hatch,” But i may have to block or eliminate a door in one of the rental apts. They have a door to the hall that will not be blocked and a fire escape that leads to the roof and to the back yard. Can I close one of the doors that the tenants never use in fact they have a bookshelf blocking the door. Any elp is appreciated.

  1. Doesn’t appear to be a problem but you gotta file it as you are adding a bulkhead to the roof. A picky examiner may even subject you to alt-1 filing for changing “egress” by blocking the door even though it is perfectly legal.

  2. So you’d end up with a fire stair to the roof, plus a fire escape, plus a standard door to the stair hall. I’d say no problem, but would want to see if before betting my license on it. If you’re extending the stairs to the roof, then you’re filing and you need an architect. That architect should be able to give you a definitive answer.
