I’m thinking of putting up adjustable shelves on a demising wall in a brownstone. The wall is plaster over brick. I’ve seen brackets at Home Depot that are double hooked and sturdy. I would place then 16″ o.c. from the picture rail down to the baseboard. What do you think? and how to attach the brackets to the wall?

  1. Lead anchors set deep enough to be well past plaster. If the anchors aren’t snug in the holes (the masonry bit can wander) I like to put some con-ad behind them, pound them in, and let them set up before I sink screws.

  2. Strength of bricks or mortar joints vary widely. To the degree that your load will pull out at the top from weight on the standards, you want to make quite sure that the fastenings are sturdy.

Rawl plugs would be of too great a diameter by the time they would be strong enough.

I would give a try with blue TapCon screws, 3-4″ minimum, because the plaster doesn’t hold at all. The pre-drill hole must be correct diameter, but also full depth, Masonry screwws do not self tap, there should be a hollow in front of the point.
