I have a laundry room on the second floor of my brownstone. The washing machine jumps and vibrates so badly that it finally has died. Does anybody have a good suggestion for a new model to buy? Looking for a top loader if possible but open to anything that will work well on a upper floor. Thanks!

  1. We have stacked front-load Samsung washer and dryer on 3rd floor. The floor isn’t totally level, but they don’t really shake except when washer is in spin mode and even then not too bad. Definitely would also recommend a drain or drip-pan in case of water leakage, if you don’t have one already.

  2. We have a top loader on a VERY uneven floor. We didn’t level the floor (impossible) but we leveled the machine and it seems to be working great so far. Fingers crossed.

  3. Just go for a front loader; it’s a much better design all around. Less water, less soap, less damage to the fabric, no vibrations, no problem with small or uneven loads.

  4. Thanks everybody…Shipping bolts are definitely out…had service a year ago and the service guy pretty much said the machine was not meant for an upper floor. It is possible the floor is not exactly level. Also just for clarification its not just vibrating, its jumping so bad that the cover has broke off and the drum has separated from the rest of the machine.

  5. almost all top loaders have leveling legs to even them out. If your installer didn’t do this….and the shipping bolts may still be in. Go to the website of the company who makes your washer and look for the installation instructions. They will tell you how to level it and how to remove the shipping bolts…see if that helps.

Of course if the floor is so unlevel that the legs can’t make up the difference..that is something else again but try leveling it first(do you have a level to do so?)

  6. Why a top-loader? Front loaders are more efficient with water, soap and gentler on your clothes. A no-brainer. Get a Bosch or other non-American brand (which are prone to the 7-year itch aka failure), less than $800.

Mine is on III floor, you can definitely tell when its spinning, but not an issue.
