The kid at the store told me the new style which has very sleek fins, will heat up faster. Is this true. Will it not also cool down quicker? Is this a better way to heat?
I am still waiting for spring to do this, does anyone know when global warming is gonna start
I had the same issue, I went to a plumbing supply at 525 Park ave, Brooklyn. they have a warehouse full of old radiators, many size/shape to chose from. They test it each piece before you pick it up (I also had my plumber double check it before installation)
Hi Pstreet. Yes, you can get a smaller orifice vent or buy a Vari-vent(it’s adjustable) made by Heat-Timer Corp. I sell both kinds and you should be able to get them locally as well. Try Bruce Supply in Brooklyn. Gorton makes the numbered vents.
Insulation does do wonders.
There’s a place on Myrtle Ave., I think down by Franklin (I forgot the cross streets if someone can help). They sell used radiators and may have one that matches the size you are looking for.
I ad the same issue, i went to Kevin Richard plumbing in Brooklyn, they have a warehouse full of old radiators, lots size/model to chose from, they will check them before give it to you, no leaks, have your plumber check it also.
Wholesale Bill . My radiator has a No. 4 vent, is there one smaller? The radiator is only 24″ wide and heats my whole 500 sq ft apt. Shame on on me for taking the time to insulate my unit properly when I renovated.
My neighbors in the co-op complain they are cold all winter long. My indoor thermometer hits 80 all the time. The same cold neighbors have mice problems. I am sure feral cats could penetrate the breaches that cause drafts in their unit. The cold night in January when the thermistor read the outdoor temp as 90 degrees and shut off the boiler my unit was a comfy 69 degrees by 7am.
Thats my venting about heating and venting story.
Pstreet—-Tape on your vent? Why don’t you buy the appropriate vent for the radiator. Sounds like my father has been reincarnated. He thought tape was the solution to everything.
Like I said earlier, it all depends on the boiler, piping and vents and hoping the guy that installed it had a clue about what he was doing.
It sounds like what the “KID” was talking about is what’s called a “fin-tube”. On a system with the exact same specs as a traditional radiator they can heat up faster and cool quicker because the heating elements (the fins) are very thin steel sheets, rather than cast iron like traditional radiators. Think of it this way, what cools quicker, your cast iron pan, or your stainless steel one? The downside, however, is of course that the cast iron ones retain their heat longer, which can be beneficial – additionally, depending on the style of your interiors, the fin tubes may not fit in so well – they certainly have a more industrial look to them.
If you want traditional, i’d suggest Burnham as mentioned above, or perhaps Governale if you want a less expensive, more industrial looking (but still traditional) alternative.
Makes sense to me. A small pot heats quicker than a big pot. I would have to research my physics to remember why. That is a great question. I suspect you just buy the size for the room that the dealer charts.
Are you talking about those wall mounts? I almost bought some. I wish I had smaller radiators at this point. I am so hot. I even tried making my vent smaller with some tape. I spend most of the winter with the window open.
One of my customers just gave some old ones away – on this site. If you can wait a while, check this site everyday and sooner or later someone will be giving some away.
The new ones are nice because they are light and cheap.
Davis and Warshow Plumbing Supply can get some real nice old style rads.
