Is PVC Permitted in a 2 Family Home Renovation?
I’ve seen that some people say that they think that PVC is permitted for the sewage pipes of a two family conversion in NYC. Is it true 100% that the DOB will permit PVC for a 2 family home? Some people say that is very noisy. What type of sound insulation would be the best…

daveinbedstuy, PVC is now allowed 5 stories or less under new Plumbing code, not 3 as you stated…that’s old Plumbing code. PVC is more noisy, proven fact….but everybody notices different things in their own homes and can get used to certain noises. If price is the issue, use PVC and do the best you can to insulate and run in areas where you don’t spend as much time in the rooms. If price isn’t an issue, put in cast iron and your questions are answered!!
If brooklander is actually talking about the hot and cold water service lines, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED BY CODE…only drain, waste and vent
I live in a 3 story, 1 family house, now with many PVC pipes.
They are not loud.
My only concern was a potential fire, and the pipes melting. To be fair, if that happened I would have other concerns than melted pipes.
I had some lead pipes (a very old house) from the main and all over the basement etc when I bought the house. I’m not sorry I changed the pipes or chose PVC. You should look around, consult with the various, and be comfortable with your own decision.
Good luck w/ it!
I have PVC in two houses and I never hear it. That’s because one house has expanded foam insulation around the pipes and the other, heavy batts. You can definitely hear the difference in the basement.
don’t do it. you will regret it.
DIBS: i thought the exact same thing when i read this post. it was like deja vu!
PVC is allowed in a three storey (two family or one family) house or smaller.
Yes it’s noisy but not so if properly insulated with either spray foam or heavy batts.
If a plumber specs cast iron and the cost difference is not that much then go with cast iron.
Anybody know where on the DOB site can be found this information? If you know the link of the PVC regulation, can you share it with all of us?
Yes it’s allowed. Yes it is noisy. Best insulation is using cast iron. Soundbats and the like will mitigate the noise, but if noise is a priority CI is a better product.
