this evening we had a scary incident which involved our fire glow fireplace. we recently had it serviced after hearing and seeing tumbling debris. tonight we heard a large crash which sounded like large bricks coming from the chimney and our fireplace was engulfed in flames. the protective glass contained the flames but smoke escaped through the event . we have NO idea what caused this. the fire dept said to contact a chimney specialists we also contacted fireglow. do you think we should contact an engineer ? does anyone know of a good one?we live next to an sro which is basically a mess and we are wondering if there is structural damage in the wall dividing us

  1. This is a wood burning masonry fireplace? look up the inside – The smoke shelf may have lost some bricks – the chimney with the other house should be a separate system – but look up and see if you can see a blockage – then call Manny – http://www.chimneymart.com

  2. Yes, call Manny Lasalle. Sounds like your chimney needs to be lined. If there’s a problem, and you want to use the firebox, it’s your responsibility to fix the chimney, not the next-door SRO.

  3. Check this site for Manny Lasalle’s contact information.
He is highly recommended on this site and I can personally vouche for his expertise with all things relating to fireplaces. Have him look at it.
